Hey, I just signed up to the new Earth Hour website for 2008 and I thought you might like to take a look and possibly sign up too. Earth Hour is on 29 March 2008 at 8pm, and it looks like it's going to be really big. So far, as well as Sydney, there'll also be Adelaide, Atlanta, Bangkok, Brisbane, Canberra, Chicago, Christchurch, Copenhagen, Dublin, Manila, Melbourne, Montreal, Odense, Ottawa, Perth, Phoenix, San Francisco, Suva, Tel Aviv, Toronto and Vancouver all turning off their lights for an hour in the name of fighting global warming. And I'm sure there'll be more cities by March. Sign up for Earth Hour with me by visiting http://www.earthhour.org/user/6It4 and join the movement.

they have a cool thing to add to facebook, too, if you're into that, to see what your biological footprint is on the earth. I also found out that despite the fact I live nearly in a different time zone, thus creating the need to drive part way to work, my moderate consumption of meat creates more problems than my large, lovely Nissan.

Join me! http://www.earthhour.org/user/6It4
17th-Feb-2008 12:00 am - Anthem

I guess I should do a little intro because I've been lurking around here for a while...

My name's Claudia, I live in Alberta Canada, and I just got a horse today! I had ridden all my youth and then have taken about five years off from riding and horses in general. However, a horse I had ridden in the past had come up for sale so my mother and I ended up going 50-50 on him, and he was brought over to our stable today.

His name is Anthem and he's a 13 year old Russian Arabian gelding. I'm not looking for any conformation critiques or anything, I'm just proud to show him off (I know he's not perfect, but he'll do what I ask and that's all I need). He was shown a bit on the Arab circuit as a hunter. He loves to jump and I think he's pretty cute :)

I've spent the last two days trying to accumulate all of the horsey things that had gotten sold when I got out of riding before. Man, is it ever tiring!

4th-Jan-2008 06:12 pm - On Vox: pfaff sewing machines
ewan

Hello everyone. I've got a question for all the sewing people out there!

A coworker of mine has asked me if I'd like a sewing machine his mother used to have.  The brand is Pfaff, and this machine was purchased in Germany, in the seventies,  and only used for five years.  It's been sitting unused for about fifteen years, and I just wanted to know a little more information/opinions about these machines before saying that I'll take it.

I currently use  this Brother machine. It's a pretty basic machine with  your every day, general  stitches and it can do button holes. Nothing fancy  but it works.  Would it be a steep learning curve to use the older Pfaff? Unfortunately, I don't know the particular model of the machine.

Thanks very much for your help and assistance!

6th-Nov-2007 11:41 am - a warning to fellow prairie provinces
ewan
Please pass this on! Important police warning. Very scary, now moving
west....started in Manitoba , now in Saskatchewan , and moving west. This
came directly from our Driver Training People who got the warning. Pass this
to anyone you can.

One of the officers who works with the DARE program has passed along the
following warning and asked that it be shared with all drivers. This is an
extremely serious matter.

If you are driving after dark and you see a car without its head-lights on,
do not flash your lights, do not blow your horn or make any signals to the
driver of the other car. There is a new common gang initiation 'game' going
on the streets.

The new member being initiated drives along without his headlights on until
someone notices and flashes their headlights or makes some sort of other
action to signal him. The gang member is now required to chase the car and
shoot at or into the car in order to complete his initiation requirements.

Make sure you share this information with your family, friends, and anyone
else you can reach. If you have any questions or information, please call
your local police department. Please take this seriously. This is not a
joke. Please pass this on to everyone you know on e-mail and in person. It
could save someone's life.

figured I may as well post this. It seems like it's been forty years since I posted here :)

This lovely little contraption is for holding tissue in your car. Much better than having a box thwack you in the head when you least expect it.

Today is a rather new low for me. I got so angry that I cried at my desk
because a Javascript Calendar and a MySQL statement wouldn't work together
in any shape or fashion.

My mother in law also scared me silly. She was asking me about the nursing
thing.

"You're not just doing it because you want the money are you?"
"No. It's going to cost a small fortune in the first place."
"What about working shifts? you know you'll have to work at night and
holidays."
"Yes, I realize that. I'm good at being unable to sleep for long periods of
time. I am also good at sleeping in the middle of the day."
"How bad are you at math? Can you tell me how many 5cc's per 100lbs to give
someone that's 250lbs?"
"As long as it's not theoretical math I can do it. But if it's trig I don't
have a problem. That's basic math, I can do that."
"What about drug interactions?"
That one stopped me dead. Someone's LIFE is in my hands and I could
accidentally kill them, Why did I never think of think of this? What if I
forget what certain drugs do? What if I have to adminster something that's
not common and I accidentally paralyze someone, or worse, kill them...

I wonder if people entering the profession think about these things too, or
if they are confident they won't kill their charges.
